Nobody really knows what truly causes asthma. However, there are many different factors that cause and trigger asthma. When looking at triggers and causes, triggers tend to refer to the things that cause asthma attacks, while causes refer to how people first get asthma.

- Atopy, an inherited tendency to form hypersensitive reactions.
- Parents who are asthma victims passing down the disease to their children genetically
- Infections in the respiratory system when young
- Contact with airborne allergens or exposure to some viral infections in infancy or in early childhood during development of the immune system
